The Andalusian Centre of Photography was founded on the background of the Imagina project, developed in Almería from 1990 to 1992 on the occasion of the V Centenary of the Discovery of America. This pioneering initiative allowed internationally reputed photographers to visit Almería and show their works –some 70 exhibitions were arranged– and also to carry out a photo production in several spots of the province, such as the desert, the coast or the city. The 456 images were gathered in a namesake exhibition and in a catalogue edited by the centre.
Once the V Centenary of the Discovery of America was over, the Andalusian Government created the Andalusian Centre of Photography as the heir to the valuable funds of the Imagina project as well as to keep and promote the interest arisen both national and internationally.
